Traditional Territories Project

October 2003

The purpose of this project is to document the historical traditional territories of the Sitka Tlingit. This builds on and updates the traditional territories documented in Walter Goldschmidt and Theodore Haas' work in their original report "Possessory Rights of the Natives of Southeastern Alaska" from 1946. Traditional territories are significant for subsistence (also called customary and traditional gathering) because people hunted, fished and gathered primarily in their traditional territories.
