Traditional Foods Program

The Sitka people pride themselves on the amount of traditonal foods that they continue to eat today, despite a bountiful selection in our grocery stores. It is not only a matter of pride, but also of spirit. The connection of Tlingit people to Haa Aani (Our Land) can be shown since time immemorial.

The Traditional Foods Program collects and distributes food to any Tribal member who requests it. Preference is given to our elders and those who are unable to get out and harvest themselves. We provide a lot of halibut, salmon, and herring eggs to our Tribal Citizens through this program. We also provide other foods as they come available.

Sitka's Most Important Herring Spawning Grounds: Kasiana Island

Herring spawn action can easily be seen from the air because the milt changes the water color to almost white. Kasiana Island is one of the most preferred places in Sitka Sound for herring to spawn. A proposed subdivision on the island has some Sitka Tribal Members concerned about the future of this popular subsistence fishery (notice the area of clear-cut, the site of a former rock quarry).
