Native American Lands Environmental Mitigation Program (NALEMP)

A Map of Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) in Sitka and around Sitka Sound.

Sitka was the site of a flurry of activity during World War II. Many military posts were established all around Sitka Sound because of fears of a Japanese invasion, similar to the invasion of Attu Island, in the Aleutian Islands. Today, many FUDS in Sitka Sound still show the ugly scars of that terrible war. It is the mission of Sitka Tribe's NALEMP program to help the Department of Defense restore Sitka Sound to its natural beauty and protect valuable subsistence resources.
