Turning the pile lets off heat and helps homogenize the mixture.

The technology utilized in the project is entitled 'aerated static pile' technology. Rather than use a windrow turner once per week on the pile, blowers were used to force air into the pile negatively. Air pushed out of the blowers was pushed through a biofilter (pile of wood chips). This enabled the process to remain virtually odor-free. However, as the pile cooled down, a front-end loader was utilized to agitate the pile. This caused the pile to heat up again, as particles were mixed and organisms were exposed to new food sources.
