Preparing Indigenous Teacher for Alaska Schools (PITAS)

"For Alaska Native high school students who want to become teachers.  Alaska is in need of indigenous teachers, highly qualified educators who will remain in rural school districts.  Site Visits, High School Mentors, Online Courses, Kusteeyi Institute, Special Events, Retreats, Audio Conferences, Tutoring, Student Financial Support, Summer Institute at UAS, Native Alaskan Education, Native/Rural Student Center."

 

Alaska Native Student Wisdom Enrichment Retreat  (ANSWER Camp)

"Geared toward improving the math and science skills of seventh and eighth grade Alaskan Natives, ANSWER Camp takes the learning process out of the classroom. By combining Alaska Native learning styles and traditional activities with middle school science and math applications in a camp setting, ANSWER Camp enables participants to build a bridge between learning in a formal setting and real life. To date, more than 950 students from 140 Alaskan communities have attended ANSWER Camp."  This year's ANSWER Camp will take Place in Sitka from July 8th-21st.  Application Deadline April 2, 2004

National Native American Youth Initiative

"Through its cooperative agreement with the Office of Minority Health, the Association of American Indian Physicians offers a Health, Biomedical Research, and Policy Development program for Native American students between 16 and 18 years old".

Native American Environmental Awareness Summer Youth Practicum

"Each year beginning in January, Native American high school students are invited to apply for the program.  Students must be in the 10-12 grades and have an interest in natural resources and in working for their tribe(s) in the future.  The program enlists 35 students who represent tribes in the U.S. and Alaska. Students are selected by a committee based on applicant's recommendations, grades and a written essay of interest."  July 17-25 Evergreen, Colorado.  Application must be postmarked by April 16, 2004

The Della Keats Enrichment Program

"High school student with a desire to become a physician, dentist, nurse, psychologist, social worker, dental hygienist or other health professional, the Della Keats Program can help you achieve your dream."

First Step Program

"This program is for students who are interested in Engineering, Business, Electronics, Aviation Maintenance, Food Service or any of the other careers that are employed within the Alaska Petroleum Industry."

Scholarships for American Indian Children

"Offering scholarships to Native American kids who want to go to elementary schools which charge tuition. If you know of any kids, their parents, or friends who might be interested, please ask them to send the child's name and address, the name of the school and a SASE. There is no fee except for the stamp."

Super Star Program

"SuperStars is a problem-based learning summer program that is provided to eligible students as an extension of the academic year Explorations activities. During the six week program, students work with their classmates in problem-based learning activities, structured experiments, and individual research. SuperStar participants receive a stipend of up to $1200 for the six weeks (housing is not provided)."  Applications due April 22, 2004.  Program runs June 21- July 30.

Brower Youth Award

"The Brower Youth Awards recognize the outstanding leadership efforts of youth across the country that are working on environmental conservation, preservation, and restoration.  The Brower Youth Awards program is a call for young environmental leaders to step forward and be recognized for their efforts. Applications are due June 1, 2004."  You must be between 13 and 22 years old on July 1, 2004.
 

Summer Medical Education Program

"SMEP is a free (full tuition, housing, and meals) six-week summer medical school preparatory program offering eligible students intensive and personalized medical school preparation. A well-established and well-respected national academic enrichment program, SMEP is located at eleven medical school sites around the country."  Must have completed at least on year of college.

Minority and Indigenous Fellows Program

"Biotechnology Institute - for minority and indigenous undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students and faculty from underrepresented-serving programs to experience firsthand what the biotechnology industry has to offer in state-of-the-art research."  Application Due March 31, 2004.

Ford Fellowships for Minorities

"This site is intended to provide information to those who plan to apply for or who have received Ford Fellowships. The Ford programs offer predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral support for members of specific underrepresented minority groups who are pursuing or have completed a Ph.D. or Sc.D. in a research-based field of study."

 

Spaceflight and Life Sciences Training Program

"It is an intense, academically challenging, six-week summer program at the KSC in Florida for undergraduate college students interested in learning how to successfully design and conduct biological research and operations in space and how to assess the environmental impacts of a launch site.  Trainees will receive round-trip transportation between their home and the Orlando International Airport, local accommodations and transportation to and from the KSC.  Trainees will receive a meal allowance."

Students Taking Experience and Practice to Success (STEPS)

"The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) and the Arizona State University in partnership are providing an opportunity to explore a six-week summer program in the areas of engineering including civil engineering, robotics, and computer science in fun ways and other technical fields. You will also explore the opportunities in business and entrepreneurship, and learn leadership and job skills that will help you obtain technical jobs. While you will be learning skills, not all of it will be work. We will be taking several field trips to throughout the six weeks to enrich your experience. After all this is your summer vacation - it should be fun!"  Open to High School Students.  Application is Due May 15


 

Pre-Law Summer Institute

PLSI is an intensive two-month program which prepares American Indian and Alaska Native individuals for the rigors of law school by essentially replicating the first semester of law school.  Applications are due March 26.

Headlands Indian Health Careers Summer Academic Enrichment Program

"Headlands Indian Health Careers is an intense academic enrichment and reinforcement program consisting of mini-block courses in calculus, chemistry, physics, biology, writing and other communication skills. Courses are designed to increase the student's background and skills so she or he is better prepared for required college-level math and  science course work in pre-health programs. These courses improve study habits for college work, raise the student's chances of success in college, and increase the probability of admission to a health professional school."  Must be a high school senior or college freshmen.  Application due March 10th.

 

AIGC - College Horizon Pre- College Workshop

"College Horizons is a five-day "crash course" in preparing for college. Expert college counselors, teamed up with admission officers from 21 colleges will help you: Select colleges suitable for you, Complete winning applications and write memorable essays, Learn what turns an applicant into an admitted student, Become a test prep "whiz kid," Find your way through the financial aid/scholarship jungle.  Students will learn about a broad variety of colleges and establish personal relationships with college representatives and college counselors that will continue long after the program is over."  Must be a High School Sophomore or Junior.  Priority application deadline is February 13; second round deadline is March 1 (later applications will be accepted on a space-available basis to June 1).

College Horizons Graduate Program is a four-day "crash course" in preparing for graduate school. Faculty, admission officers, and deans from 30 graduate and professional schools will help you: select programs and careers suitable for you, complete winning applications and write memorable personal statements, learn what turns an applicant into an admitted student, become a test prep "whiz kid" on the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, & MCAT, find your way through the financial aid/scholarship jungle, explore special issues for Native students, learn graduate school survival tips, students will learn about a broad variety of programs and establish personal relationships with university representatives that will continue long after the program is over. Must be a college student or college graduate.  Priority application deadline is February 13; second round deadline is March 1 (later applications will be accepted on a space-available basis to June 1).

Dream Makers Summer Program

The Dream Makers Summer Program is a two-week enrichment program designed to encourage Indian Youth to pursue a high school and college education. Thirty American Indian students, who complete the sixth or seventh grade by June 2004, will be selected to participate in the summer program at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Students will experience a glimpse of campus life as well as attend numerous educational seminars. Field Trips and recreational activities have also been scheduled.
